dinner at the toff in town with martin martini

Went to see Mr Martin Martini play last night at the Toff in Town (TIT) as part of the Melbourne Writers Festival. I’d been to the TIT twice before and each time I’d regretted spending my monies there. There are much better places in Melbourne that do modern Thai (Chin Chin, Tom Phat), where the servings are  bigger, the food tastier and the atmosphere more electrifying.

Martin Martini was fabulous and his usual humble self. Three illustrators were there to interpret Martini’s music and draw what came to their head (or hands, rather). The results were interesting, absurd, funny and disturbing. Jim Woodring’s work was particularly amusing and very witty – a suitable complement to Martini’s own art. There were angry ladies, roads, cars, monsters and flowers coming out of heads amongst other things.
